Rituals- they can make a union stronger, or the monotony can kill the vibe.
We had been trying to make time to listen to 'Easy on me' by Adele, for the last 2 weeks. Our rituals were now becoming like a task list, losing its sheen and pleasure. Breaking in new music together, as audiophiles topped the list of our many rituals.
Sharing wired earphones, old school style, brought back so many memories from our early dating days. Walkman in my flared bootcut denims' back pocket, walking hand in hand around college, without a care in the world. In many ways, we were old school, like Adele. Boomers, like the current crop would call us. We subscribe to the adage- Broken and fixed is better than new. Maybe that's why we don't give up on each other. We believe we are fixable. Broken, but worth fixing Not meant to be discarded for the new.
'There ain't no room for things to change.....When we are both so deeply stuck in our ways'
Her voice has an 80's charm with a balm to soothe over the endless river of pain we have endured. Exactly what the doctor ordered.
These lyrics hit home hard. I smile, while my heart is heavy with acknowledgement of the truth. The choices we have made have brought us on very different paths, and we no longer recognise the other. The familiar route that we knew at the back of our hands with our eyes closed, has been washed by the waves of time and is a now, a distant memory.
Alpha vs. Alpha. No one ever really wins this battle.
One has to relent, both have to accept. Or meet, somewhere in the middle.
I can see the corners of your eyes crinkle as the sunlight brings your wrinkles to life while you listen to the same lyrics. We have aged light years in our on-off relationship mode. Resetting the timeline takes a toll on our communication, we have now become politically correct. I miss the authenticity. The raw honesty. The quick implusive responses. The spontaneity. The spark.
Our eyes meet and speak a language of love. One that we had forgotten, in our need to beat the other to the winners podium. Perhaps, it's time to go easy on us....
Diverge or Converge?
Whichever path leads to our sanity and peace.
